New iOS jailbreak could become sinister

A new jailbreak for Apple's iOS software that uses confidential information intended only for security researchers could develop into a more sinister attack, according to security analysts. The "Pangu" jailbreak, believed to be developed in China, was publicized earlier this week on a website. Applying the software allows Apple mobile devices running iOS 7.1 or higher to run unauthorized applications, which Apple discourages. The jailbreak is notable for two reasons. First, it uses a special code-signing certificate issued by Apple that allows enterprises to install applications on their users' devices that do not come from the company's App Store. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

'Luuuk' banking malware may have stolen $682,000 in a week

A European bank may have lost as much as €500,000 (US$682,000) in a week earlier this year, according to Kaspersky Lab, which analyzed data on a server used in attacks against online banking users in Italy and Turkey. In a blog post Wednesday, the Russian security company didn't identify the bank or why it chose to reveal the possible theft six months later. The financial institution has been notified of the discovery, and Kaspersky said is in contact with law enforcement. On Jan. 20, Kaspersky analysts discovered a command-and-control server for a piece of malware that executed so-called man-in-the-browser attacks on victims' computers. In that type of attack, malware intervenes during an online banking session and can manipulate or steal data.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Like other tech giants, Facebook is very white and very male

Facebook has followed Google and Yahoo in revealing just how diverse its workforce is, and just like the other two tech giants, it's a whole lot white and a whole lot male.Just over two-thirds of Facebook's global workforce is male, but that number shoots up to 85 percent when just core "tech" employees, largely engineers, are counted. Among senior management, the company counts 77 percent as male.In the U.S., 57 percent of Facebook's entire workforce is white, 34 percent is Asian, 3 percent is Hispanic and 2 percent is black, with the remainder counting two or more races. Among engineering staff, the percentage of white employees drops to 53 percent, while the number of Asian employees jumps to 41 percent, while among senior management, 74 percent are male and 19 percent Asian. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
