Shipping companies' computers compromised by malware-infected Chinese scanners

Malware-infected scanners sold by a Chinese manufacturer led to the theft of sensitive financial and operational data from at least a half-dozen U.S. and European logistics and shipping companies.[Chinese cyberspies targeting U.S., European defense, space sectors]The malware was also found in software available for download on the manufacturer's Website, security vendor TrapX reported Thursday. Gmail users on iOS at risk of data interception

Apple users accessing Gmail on mobile devices could be at risk of having their data intercepted, a mobile security company said Thursday.The reason is Google has not yet implemented a security technology that would prevent attackers from viewing and modifying encrypted communications exchanged with the Web giant, wrote Avi Bashan, chief information security officer for Lacoon Mobile Security, based in Israel and the U.S.Websites use digital certificates to encrypt data traffic using the SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security) protocols. Amazon seeks US exemption to test delivery drones

Amazon.com has asked the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration permission to test drones outdoors for use in its Prime Air package delivery service.In the run up to launching the service, which aims to deliver packages in 30 minutes or less, the online retailer is developing aerial vehicles that travel over 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour, and will carry 5pound (2.3 kilogram) payloads, which account for 86 percent of the products sold on Amazon.U.S. regulations currently allow non-commercial, hobbyist uses of model aircraft under certain conditions, but the FAA has been exploring giving exemptions to seven aerial photo and video production companies for filming movies, ahead of finalizing rules for the integration of commercial unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the national airspace.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Google gets a helping hand from Microsoft, IBM, Red Hat

IBM, Microsoft, Red Hat and other IT vendors are lending a hand to Google to help build software that enterprises could use to manage their computerized workloads in the cloud.The companies will work to refine software developed by Google that manages computer jobs that run on hosted cloud services offered by Google, IBM, Microsoft and others. The cloud market is highly lucrative—IT analyst firm IDC estimates that total worldwide cloud spending, for both public and private clouds, was around US$56 billion in 2013 and will grow to around $135 billion by 2017.The software, called Kubernetes, "can make systems much more productive and also helps make more efficient infrastructure," said Craig McLuckie, Google senior product manager.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
