Bell Labs claims new speed record over regular old copper wiring
Most of the higher-speed Internet connections used by businesses these days require fiber-optic cabling, but Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs division claimed this week to have reached 10Gbps using nothing but new transmission technology and ordinary copper wiring. The technology, called XG-FAST, is an outgrowth of a standard undergoing final review at the International Telecommunications Union, called G.fast. The G.fast specification calls for the use of a wide spectrum range of 106MHz – far larger than that used by existing DSL technology. Effectively, G.fast can send or receive data much faster than conventional DSL, though it can only do so over comparatively short distances, around 100 meters.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

DARPA demos lightweight, 94GHz silicon system on a chip
Looking to bring lighter, more powerful and less expensive systems for various applications such as communications, radar or guidance systems, DARPA said this week it had recently demonstrated an all-silicon, microchip-sized system on a chip that runs at 94 GHz.DARPA claims that this chip is the first time a silicon-only package has achieved such a high frequency, which falls in the millimeter-wave range.+More on Network World: Quick look: NASA tests supersonic Mars flying saucer+"What normally would require multiple circuit boards, separate metal shielded assemblies and numerous I/O cables we can now miniaturize onto one silicon chip about half the size of an adult's thumbnail," said Dev Palmer, DARPA program manager in a statement. Getting computers to think like humans has been a scientific goal for years – IBM recently said it found a way to make transistors that could be formed into virtual circuitry that mimics human brain functions.
