Instagram's Hyperlapse app gives videos a time-lapse effect

Instagram on Tuesday released Hyperlapse, a stand-alone app that will let people record longer videos and then speed them up for a time-lapse effect. The free app is currently available only in Apple's App Store for iOS 7 and up. The required APIs (application programming interfaces) are not currently available to launch the app on Android, an Instagram spokeswoman said. VMware takes its best shot at cloud market

VMware this week at its annual U.S. VMworld conference has focused intently on cloud computing, trying to prove that it is uniquely positioned as an Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider to deliver a consistent management platform across public, private and hybrid clouds. This builds on VMware's recent vow to become a Top 3 cloud provider. To back up its marketing, VMware this week has unveiled a slew of product news, including OpenStack support and new public cloud functions. It needed to do so, according to industry watchers and the company itself, since VMware is still in the earliest stages of executing its ambitious cloud strategy. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Customers praise Microsoft's 'no BS' explanation of cloud service outage

A Microsoft executive last week gave what some users called a "refreshingly direct" and "no BS, straight-talking" explanation of a several-hour outage of the cloud-based Visual Studio Online, collecting kudos for acknowledging mistakes and spelling out what happened. In an Aug. 22 blog post, Brian Harry, a Microsoft Technical Fellow, corporate vice president, and product unit manager for Team Foundation Server, detailed the Aug. 14 outage of Visual Studio Online, the cloud service designed to help development teams manage complex projects.Visual Studio Online was offline in some regions late Wednesday and early Thursday, Aug. 13-14, but troubles mounted Thursday morning until they became a total outage that lasted five-and-a-half hours. "This duration and severity makes this one of the worst incidents we've ever had on VS Online," Harry wrote. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Verizon Says Passwords Suck, QR Codes Offer Better Way

Are you sick of usernames and passwords as a method of user authentication? Verizon says it has a better way. It's beefing up its Universal Identity Services portfolio with a QR code login that enterprises can deploy to streamline logins for both internal and external users.MORE ON NETWORK WORLD: Free security tools you should try "Lost and stolen passwords remain the No. 1 way that systems are compromised," says Tracy Hulver, chief identity strategist for Verizon. "We continue to see usernames and passwords fail as a secure way to login no matter how complex the password. With Verizon's QR code login, we are making progress in protecting users without increasing the hassle, headache or expense for the user and the enterprise."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Git legit in the enterprise

This vendor-written tech primer has been edited by Network World to eliminate product promotion, but readers should note it will likely favor the submitter's approach. Originally created as a distributed code management system for open source development, Git's popularity has skyrocketed as independent developers have adopted the tool for its speed, flexibility and powerful branch and merge features. The popularity has caught the attention of the enterprise, but Git has some hurdles to vault before it will work for everyone. After all, Git was designed with a specific set of goals in mind, not all of which cohere with the mission of enterprise software development, such as the need for security and scalability. Let's look at these in more detail. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Google buys Zync for large scale cloud rendering

To beef up its cloud platform with more specialized packages, Google is acquiring Zync for its large scale rendering service for movie special effects, called Zync Render.Google plans to offer the Zync service on its Google Cloud Platform, where it can be used by motion picture studios that do not want to build their own rendering farms.Motion picture studios have used Zync Render to create special effects for a number of movies, including "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Looper."Zync was founded five years ago, originally under the name of Zero VFX, as a cloud-based rendering service. The acquisition will provide Zync customers with better pricing and more scalability, as well as additional rendering packages, according to a statement from Zync.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Review: Odds and ends from around the office

Time once again to do a rapid-fire roundup of things that have been sitting around the Cool Tools International Testing and Reviews Lab (aka my desk), in anticipation of receiving a ton of new stuff to test for the annual Cool Yule Tools holiday gift guide. These are all still very cool things to own and buy for the purposes they were designed to handle, but it's easier to put them into a roundup than a full-length, Cool Tools-style review (not that those are mega-masterpieces anyway).  OK, away we go! Epson Expression Premium XP-810 (about $130 via Amazon Prime): This all-in-one wireless printer is the nth iteration of the original Artisan series of all-in-ones from Epson, the higher end model that lets you print documents, copy, scan, fax (do people still do that?) and print photos. In an office setting it's likely that you will have larger laser-style printers that you can print and copy and scan with, but for SMBs or home workers, this certainly fits the bill. The best part of the printer is its ability to print quality photos via inkjet inks, as this system includes 5 colors (black, cyan, magenta, yellow and "Photo Black"). However, I wasn't as impressed with the images from this system compared with previous Artisan printers, which included six different ink cartridges (adding light cyan and light magenta to the regular CMYK mix). The printer includes support for the Epson Connect technology, which lets you print photos directly from a tablet, smartphone or computer, as well as Ethernet and Wi-Fi support. If you haven't yet experienced an Epson printer yet, it's a worthy investment (at least until Epson refreshes its printer line, as this one came out in September 2013).To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Job solicitations multiply for tech talent

Most happily employed IT pros would consider a new job opportunity – and there are plenty more to consider these days as recruiters struggle to fill in-demand positions.New survey data shows 81% of IT pros are open to new job opportunities even when they're not actively seeking another job. IT staffing provider TEKsystems found that IT pros, on average, receive 34 solicitations per week. That's an increase of 48% compared to 2012, when employees averaged 23 solicitations per week."Most of the data really wasn't unexpected. It's more a validation of what we see on a daily basis in the IT staffing industry," says Jason Hayman, market research manager at TEKsystems. "We know competition for talent is fierce. We know employers really need to work harder than ever to retain their best and brightest. We know that time, money, and resources are often wasted during the hiring process."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
