'The cloud is the new normal,' Amazon Web Services executive says
The cloud is no longer relegated to handling ancillary jobs, but is quickly become the base for mission critical—or even all—enterprise IT operations, the head of Amazon Web Services said."The cloud is the new normal," said Andy Jassy, Amazon Web Services senior vice president during Wednesday's opening keynote of the company's annual Re:Invent conference in Las Vegas. In order to test the cloud, organizations might first try using it for ancillary hosted services, Jassy said. They then might use the cloud as a launching pad for new services, rather than operating those in house, sidestepping the burden of moving legacy applications or data to a different environment. Next up for those testing the cloud might be to ramp up its use for mobile or analytic applications. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Four websites run by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have been compromised in recent weeks, the agency said on Wednesday.NOAA, the part of the U.S. Department of Commerce that includes the National Weather Service, "deflected" the attacks, the agency said in a statement. Some services were down for unscheduled maintenance but were restored as of Wednesday afternoon, the agency said."These effects did not prevent us from delivering forecasts to the public," NOAA said in the statement. The agency's investigation of the breach is not finished, the agency said.Chinese hackers were suspected in the attack, according to a Washington Post story, but a NOAA spokesman declined to talk about the source of the attack. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

With Clutter, Microsoft is less cautious about bringing machine learning to the masses
Microsoft's new Clutter feature for cleaning up your inbox automatically is the latest of several tools based on machine learning that the Office team thinks are ready for prime time. In fact, it's the latest of many machine learning tools that researchers at Microsoft have developed over the years. But this time, Microsoft is confident enough to make them broadly available.Like Delve, which suggests relevant documents and discussions from your colleagues, it uses the Office Graph to understand who you actually connect to and collaborate with and who is just interrupting you. Delve makes lists like "presentations you've seen in meetings" by cross-referencing who was at the meetings you were invited to, what files they've saved and the timestamp on files that were presented at the right time to be in the meeting. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Juniper needs to get it right this time
Retaining and maintaining customer trust, confidence and respect will be key for Juniper Networks going forward now after two misfires in the CEO's office. Shaygan Kheradpir resigned suddenly this week after the Juniper board questioned his leadership and conduct with a particular customer, whom they did not name.It was obviously an important customer, perhaps a 10% revenue customer. Juniper hasn't disclosed a 10% customer since Q1, 2013, and at that time there were two: Verizon – Kheradpir's former employer – and AT&T, which recently added Juniper to its preferred list of Domain 2.0 SDN/NFV vendors. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Microsoft fixes critical crypto flaw, strenghtens encryption for older systems
Microsoft fixed a critical vulnerability Tuesday in the Windows cryptographic library that could expose Windows servers to remote code execution attacks. The update also adds support for stronger and more modern cryptographic ciphers to older Windows versions."The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an attacker sends specially crafted packets to a Windows server," Microsoft's said in a security bulletin called MS14-066. However, the flaw is in the Microsoft Secure Channel (SChannel) component that exists in all Windows versions and implements the SSL and TLS cryptographic protocols. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
