Patch Tuesday: 16 security advisories, 5 critical for Windows

Microsoft is issuing the largest number of monthly security advisories since June 2011, five of them critical and affecting all supported versions of Windows. And applying the patches will be time consuming, experts say."Next week will tell us how many CVEs are involved but suffice to say, this patch load will be a big impact to the enterprise," says Russ Ernst, the director of product management for Lumension.+[Also on Network World: Microsoft Office advancements are a boost for BYOD programs]+To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Facebook will be mostly video in 5 years , Zuckerberg says

If you think your Facebook feed has a lot of video now, just wait."In five years, most of [Facebook] will be video," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday during the company's first community town hall, in which he took questions from the public on a range of topics. He was responding to a question about whether the growing number of photos uploaded to Facebook is putting a drag on its infrastructure. But Facebook's data centers have it covered, he said. The real challenge is improving the infrastructure to allow for more rich media like video in people's feeds.Zuckerberg took questions from a group of users who were invited to its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, and people also submitted questions online. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Companies use urban office locations to attract IT talent

To attract workers in the competitive technology job market, remote connectivity service provider LogMeIn decided that a change of address was needed. For about a decade, the company was based in an office park in Woburn, Massachusetts, a suburb 10 miles north of Boston. But as LogMeIn discovered that younger tech workers preferred to live and work in the city, in 2013 the company moved to a trendy waterfront Boston neighborhood and turned a former warehouse built in 1904 into its loft-like headquarters."We felt that for us to continue to attract the talent we wanted and compete with companies, getting into Boston would be better for us for talent recruitment," said Chief Financial Officer Jim Kelliher, who helped spearhead the move.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Peeping into 73,000 unsecured security cameras thanks to default passwords

Yesterday I stumbled onto a site indexing 73,011 locations with unsecured security cameras in 256 countries …unsecured as in "secured" with default usernames and passwords. The site with an IP address from Russia is further broken down into insecure security cameras by the manufacturers Foscam, Linksys, Panasonic, some listed only as "IP cameras," as well as AvTech and Hikvision DVRs. 11,046 of the links were to U.S. locations, more than any other country; one link could have up to eight or 16 channels, meaning that's how many different security camera views were displayed on one page. insecam Truthfully, I was torn about linking to the site which claims to be "designed in order to show the importance of security settings;" the purpose of the site is supposedly to show how not changing the default password means that the security surveillance system is "available for all Internet users" to view. Change the defaults to secure the camera, to make it private, and it disappears from the index. According to FAQs, people who choose not to secure their cameras can write the site administrator and ask for the URL to be removed. But that implies knowing the site exists. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

The Human Side of IT Security

The importance of IT security has vastly increased with the expansion in mobility, cloud computing, and social networking. Securing the organization is difficult enough, but it is considerably more difficult because of a number of factors tied to people. Learn more

Juniper Networks doubles down on virtualization

Cloud computing, mobility, and the Internet of Things have raised the bar on network agility. Service providers require an agile network to rapidly deliver services that can create new revenue streams. Network functions virtualization (NFV) has been viewed as a panacea to enable service providers to shift to a more agile network.Juniper Networks has been among the most aggressive network vendors when it comes to NFV and has a robust set of virtual security offerings available today. This week, Juniper took a huge step forward with its NFV strategy by announcing it had virtualized its flagship product, the MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routing platform. The MX series has long been the workhorse for Juniper and is widely deployed in every region of the globe. It is arguable the company's most successful product ever.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Tech's new blue collar: Good-paying jobs that don't require a 4-year degree

Where the jobs areImage by Ford assembly line, 1913. Public Domain/WikipediaFor years, you've heard the same story: the days when low-skilled manufacturing jobs could lead to a middle-class lifestyle are long gone, and the key to economic success lies in getting advanced degrees in STEM subjects. But that picture's not entirely true: there are many career paths, beginning to be labelled as "middle-skill" jobs, that are in technical areas but don't require a bachelor's degree. The so-called "hidden STEM economy" is entered through associate's degrees, trade schools, and apprenticeships. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

After criticizing it, Cisco joins Open Compute

Cisco has joined the Open Compute Project, a Facebook-driven effort to develop open source servers and switches, 16 months after criticizing it. At that time, Cisco CEO John Chambers said OCP has "weaknesses" that Cisco can exploit.Chambers said efforts like Facebook's to commoditize and wring cost out of hardware purchases will open up opportunities for Cisco to provide solutions that are better tailored to specific customer needs: I think this will just be one more series of good challenges that Cisco will say 'what's the business objective on.' There are a lot of weaknesses to the area -- we're going to go back and solve customer problems. If you're standalone anything, this is going to be a hard market to play in. Anything white label, where the decision is cost or opex, you're going to lose.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Old 'pole box' net beats 911 on fire call

Who would have thought those fire alarm "pole boxes" even worked anymore? They don't in most places, but a couple of teenagers in Canton, Mass., either knew or figured it was worth a try there when they spotted a building fire Saturday night. From the Canton Police Department's Facebook page: Matt (Casamento) and W.T. (Khoury) were out and about and noticed the rear of a building on Washington Street was on fire. The fire was in a spot that probably would not have been noticed for some time if it wasn't for the boys. They ran around to the front of the building -- Matt called 911 and W.T. did something that most adults wouldn't think to do – he ran and pulled the nearest "pole box." Pole boxes are fairly rare these days except in urban and populated areas and they are quite antiquated. We still have them in Canton. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
