Peeping into 73,000 unsecured security cameras thanks to default passwords

Yesterday I stumbled onto a site indexing 73,011 locations with unsecured security cameras in 256 countries …unsecured as in "secured" with default usernames and passwords. The site with an IP address from Russia is further broken down into insecure security cameras by the manufacturers Foscam, Linksys, Panasonic, some listed only as "IP cameras," as well as AvTech and Hikvision DVRs. 11,046 of the links were to U.S. locations, more than any other country; one link could have up to eight or 16 channels, meaning that's how many different security camera views were displayed on one page. insecam Truthfully, I was torn about linking to the site which claims to be "designed in order to show the importance of security settings;" the purpose of the site is supposedly to show how not changing the default password means that the security surveillance system is "available for all Internet users" to view. Change the defaults to secure the camera, to make it private, and it disappears from the index. According to FAQs, people who choose not to secure their cameras can write the site administrator and ask for the URL to be removed. But that implies knowing the site exists. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Net neutrality advocates: Hybrid approach won't work

In the fractious debate over net neutrality, efforts to strike a compromise don't seem to be working. A proposal reportedly favored by a top U.S. regulator is drawing fire from groups on both sides of the issue, with 70 pro-net neutrality groups speaking up against the plan Friday.Following a recent news report that U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler is leaning toward a so-called hybrid net neutrality proposal that regulates only a piece of broadband service, the groups advocating for strong net neutrality rules sent him a letter saying the plan would "threaten the open Internet."While pro-net neutrality groups say a hybrid regulatory model wouldn't go far enough to protect Internet users, groups opposed to strong regulations say it goes too far. Verizon Communications, in a blog post this week, said a lighter regulatory approach would be the best way for the FCC to avoid a court challenge. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

NASA pondering $1.5 million stratospheric airship competition

NASA this week said it was contemplating a public competition to build airships capable of reaching the stratosphere where it could remain for a period of time gathering astronomy data or watching environmental changes on the ground. NASA this week issued a Request For Information to gather industry interest in and the feasibility of such a competition that the agency says would have a prize purse ranging from $1 to $1.5 million dollars.+More on Network World: 13 cool high-tech prize competitions+To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

'It was exactly like a death' … (Gulp)

Oddly enough, this line from a blog post made me laugh out loud just now:"It was exactly like a death; like someone I knew and loved was in excellent health one day and stone dead the next." How could I be so insensitive as to find amusement in such anguish?Well, "exactly like a death" in this instance refers to the fact that 10 Barrel Brewing Co. of Bend, Ore., has been bought by Anheuser-Busch.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Apple's sapphire supplier falls under SEC microscope

Apple's erstwhile sapphire supplier, GT Advanced Technologies, acknowledged Thursday that it is being investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).In a filing with the SEC, GT said that the federal agency had contacted the company three weeks ago."On October 15, 2014, [the SEC] sent a letter to the Company noting that it was conducting an inquiry into matters involving the Company," the filing stated. Companies use urban office locations to attract IT talent

To attract workers in the competitive technology job market, remote connectivity service provider LogMeIn decided that a change of address was needed. For about a decade, the company was based in an office park in Woburn, Massachusetts, a suburb 10 miles north of Boston. But as LogMeIn discovered that younger tech workers preferred to live and work in the city, in 2013 the company moved to a trendy waterfront Boston neighborhood and turned a former warehouse built in 1904 into its loft-like headquarters."We felt that for us to continue to attract the talent we wanted and compete with companies, getting into Boston would be better for us for talent recruitment," said Chief Financial Officer Jim Kelliher, who helped spearhead the move.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Study: Internet sales tax would cost consumers billions

A proposed Internet sales tax that could see new life in Congress in coming weeks would cost U.S. online shoppers $24 billion in its first year, according to a study from an anti-tax group.Supporters of the Marketplace Fairness Act, passed by the Senate in May 2013, could push the House of Representatives to pass the bill after lawmakers return to Washington, D.C, next week for a short session before a newly elected Congress takes office in January. But the legislation, which would allow states and local governments to collect sales tax on Internet purchases their residents make from sellers elsewhere, would cost U.S. Internet shoppers $300 billion to $340 billion over 10 years, said the study, commissioned by the National Taxpayers Union. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Apple was warned about WireLurker months ago, Georgia Tech researcher says

The WireLurker malware that may have infected hundreds of thousands of Mac OS and iOS devices is exactly similar to a proof-of-concept attack Apple was warned about at the beginning of this year, according to the researcher who first publicly described such attacks. The malware can siphon off data from iOS devices when they sync up with computers or are charged by computers via USB cables, but the potential for this type of attack can be much broader, says Tielei Wang, a researcher at Georgia Institute of Technology who presented a paper about such attacks at USENIX Security Symposium in August. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
