Network World Daily News AM | | Why, Hello thereThe fact that modern browsers update silently and often occasionally takes some of the savor out of a new release. Rapid releases mean new features are deployed in a dribble, rather than in bursts. With Firefox 34, however, Mozilla has bucked the trend, giving us a swath of new features to enjoy all at once. IT must push for 100% virtualization, simplified disaster recovery systems, and efficient data protection solutions to achieve greater administrative efficiencies and meet these demands. Learn more | The single most common issue faced by the IT pros surveyed recently by Kelton Research is network slowdowns or outages, which outstripped application performance problems, availability and even the dreaded "unanticipated change request." The study, commissioned by IT performance analysis vendor TeamQuest, tracked the opinions of more than 400 IT management professionals who work at companies with 1,000 or more employees. The findings, which were released today, unsurprisingly centered on the importance of analytics for the data center and the hazards posed by a lack of oversight and IT efficiency. +ALSO ON NETWORK WORLD: Cheapest tablets pose biggest security risks | BYOD is saving serious money for IT +To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE | 1. So sophisticated and dense that they let few people or other systems gain any significant visibility into their real machinery and software. They are in fact mysterious black boxes. The researchers at DARPA think its time for a change in the way security is handled in such systems and later this month will detail a program they call Transparent Computing (TC) they says "will develop technologies to record and preserve the provenance of all system elements/components (inputs, software modules, processes, etc.); dynamically track the interactions and causal dependencies among cyber system components; assemble these dependencies into end-to-end system behaviors; and reason over these behaviors, both forensically and in real-time."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE | OpenDNS has developed a partner API that lets security vendors connect their technologies to the OpenDNS cloud for enforcement, effectively extending protection to any device no matter where it connects to the Internet. OpenDNS CEO David Ulevitch The first two such partners are Check Point and ZeroFOX, and the company will announce another dozen or so partners over the next few months, says OpenDNS CEO David Ulevitch. + Also on Network World: How the cloud is changing the security game +To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE | WHITE PAPER: Riverbed Technology Despite tighter budgets driven by the fragile economy, IT departments remain under intense pressure to deliver additional and higher-performance computing, network and application services worldwide. Users could go to 10-Gigabit ethernet, but for most that would require installing more advanced cable. So the search is on for something in between that works on the most common kinds of cable over at least 100 meters. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE | It's holiday shopping season, and it's time for me to nag you about security. You'll likely be shopping online a lot in the coming weeks, and many of the sites you visit will require passwords. None of us have solid-state memory inside of our heads (yet), so it's easy to be sloppy with passwords. Don't. Seriously. People get hacked all the time, and it's a major pain in the butt. Some simple advice: Use a password manager.Password managers are applications that store all of your passwords in encrypted spaces. If, for example, you store a username and password for your bank, the manager automatically fills in the appropriate fields when you visit your banking site. Password managers can also generate passwords, fill out forms and share passwords across multiple devices. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE | I'm going to make a prediction. The breach at Sony Pictures has nothing to do with North Korea, aside form the fact that the destructive malware believed to be present on Sony's network is similar to the malware used in South Korea in 2013 - an incident that was blamed on North Korea. Furthermore, I predict there will be an insider aspect to Sony's breach. The first part of the attack on Sony centered on compromising records, once done, the attackers planted malware that was timed - based on the FBI memo - to activate just before Thanksgiving. The easiest way to accomplish this task - assuming I'm right - is by having someone on the inside with just enough access that everything looks normal with a passive glance at the logs.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE | Whether you think of them as superphones or microtablets, the two main contenders are closely matched READ MORE | WEBCAST: CenturyLink and Intel The importance of infrastructure in getting the right performance in the enterprise context and a persuasive business case for making the move from internal hosting to the public cloud. The most common is an on-demand pricing model where customers enter credit card information and pay for virtual machines by the hour. For customers who plan to use the resources for a longer period of time, AWS offers Reserved Instances (RI) that carry a contract of either one or three years. Previously customers had to pay for those RIs up front, but today AWS announced that customers can pay for the RIs throughout the life of the contract. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE | Microsoft's Windows 10 is still in testing, but hardware makers can't wait for the day the OS replaces the controversial Windows 8.Millions of PCs are aging, and those who have resisted Windows 8 will likely upgrade to computers with Windows 10. The initial reception to a test version of Windows 10 has been positive, as it resolves many usability issues affecting Windows 8.There are about 600 million PCs that are four years or older, and those systems are ripe for upgrades, said Renee James, president at Intel, at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference on Tuesday."When we see a healthy macroeconomic environment and an aging installed base we expect a new [OS] deployment. The [PCs] are fantastic and at new price points. That's kind of a perfect storm, combined with a new OS, and the OS usually pushes the upgrade cycle," James said.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE | Sprint donned its boxing gloves with an extravagant offer to cut monthly wireless rate plans in half for new customers who switch to Sprint from either Verizon Wireless or AT&T.The new "Cut Your Bill in Half" offer, which starts Friday, notably doesn't apply to T-Mobile customers.
