Apple introduces iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

At its big fall event in Cupertino today, Apple unveiled two new iPhones: the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. As expected, both new models sport much larger screens than previous versions. The standard iPhone 6 now sports a 4.7-inch display, while the iPhone 6 Plus comes with a massive 5.5-inch screen, putting it squarely in "phablet" territory. Storage on both iPhone models now tops out at 128GB, double the amount of previous models, and cameras have been updated as well.

Hyperbole alert: Apple news to be 'historic'

ABC News last night on its broadcast and this morning on its website is promising us that today's gadget announcements by Apple will be "historic."Historic how? As in World War II, moon landing, 9/11 historic? What could possibly make this Apple product announcement – or any gadget announcement, for that matter -- historic?Well, let's use our imaginations: We might learn that the iPhone 6 will double as a teleportation device. Apple's new smartwatch could extend the day from 24 to 25 hours. Steve Jobs walks out on stage. That would be historic. HP showcases security software that look to detect infected and compromised computers

At its HP Protect Conference in Washington, D.C. this week, HP is taking the wraps off new security products that aim to detect infected and compromised machines as well as server-based software that makes use of so-called "run-time" self-protection to keep from getting infected in the first place.HP Enterprise Security Products announced HP Application Defender, software that when loaded as an agent onto Web or application servers, can detect and block attempts to exploit code vulnerabilities through the use of a technology known as "runtime application self-protection" (RASP). The Gartner consultancy says RASP products constitute a new security approach evident for only the past two years in which security software basically works as an instrumentation of runtime in servers or clients to protect against attacks such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting and unauthorized access. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Ericsson accelerates indoor LTE speed to 300Mbps

Ericsson is pushing the boundaries on equipment for LTE-Advanced, launching a picocell base station capable of delivering download speeds of up to 300Mbps and integration with fast Wi-Fi.LTE-Advanced is slowly starting to take off around the world, with operators upgrading their networks. To improve coverage and bandwidth in smaller buildings and venues, customized equipment is needed. With that in mind Ericsson has launched the RBS 6402 picocell, a small base station for indoor environments measuring up to 5,000 square meters (roughly 54,000 square feet) that the company hopes to sell to mobile operators. The operators can then sign deals with enterprises and owners of malls and sports venues to install the bandwidth-boosting product. The carriers can install it themselves or get help from Ericsson. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

The Linux desktop-a-week review: ratpoison

Near the beginning of my adventure through every Linux Desktop Environment on the planet, I spent some time with Awesome, a minimalist (to say the least) environment that, while I had mixed feelings on, ultimately proved true to its name. With that experience fresh in my mind, I had high hopes for the environment selected for me to live full time in for this last week – ratpoison.Normally, I'd make you wait for the end of the article to discover my ultimate conclusion. But I just can't do that this time. You see... I hated it. No. That doesn't do my feelings on ratpoison justice. The heat of my hatred burned hotter than a thousand suns. Ratpoison should be sent to The Hague and put on trial for crimes against humanity. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
