9 things to look for in Windows 9

Microsoft is holding a press briefing Tuesday to broadly discuss the future of Windows, but the expectation is that the company will also introduce specifics of Windows 9, including features such as Cortana and virtual desktops. The first two iterations of Windows 8 met with resistance from customers, and the changes made for Windows 8.1 seemed geared toward making traditional mouse-and-keyboard Windows desktop users more comfortable switching over to a system designed for touch. With Windows 9, Microsoft seems bent on improving this further. + Also on Network World: Cortana reported to take a major role in Windows 9 |Microsoft boards-up research lab amid more layoffs +To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Intel Encourages Women to Pursue Cloud Training

Despite making up slightly more than half the U.S. population and filling slightly more than 50 percent of professional positions in the U.S., the percentage of women in technology jobs in the U.S. has been in decline. Intel sees that as a big problem with many causes, says Raejeanne Skillern, general manager of the Cloud Service Provider Business at Intel.Skillern says that cloud computing is a field of explosive growth in the IT sector, yet between 1.2 million and 1.7 million roles in that area are going unfilled due to a lack of qualified applicants. At the same time, women spend more time online than men, according to comScore. They also outnumber men on nearly all social networks, according to Pew Research Center. And yet, Skillern says, while women are consuming these services more than men, it is largely men that are programming the Web: Women comprise only 20 percent of programmers and 25 percent of IT managers in 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

The cybercriminals behind the CryptoWall ransomware threat have stepped up their game and are digitally signing new samples before using them in attacks in an attempt to bypass antivirus detection.Researchers from network security firm Barracuda Networks found new CryptoWall samples that were digitally signed with a legitimate certificate obtained from DigiCert. The samples were distributed through drive-by download attacks launched from popular websites via malicious advertisements.Several websites in the Alexa top 15,000 list were affected by this latest malvertising—malicious advertising—campaign including hindustantimes.com, the site of Indian daily newspaper Hindustan Times; Israeli sports news site one.co.il; and Web development community codingforums.com.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
