In memoriam: Apple's iPod through the years
"Image by REUTERS/Susan RaganLast week, Apple finally retired the venerable iPod Classic, triggering a wave of nostalgia from folks who fondly remember the iPod era before everything became a touchscreen. Removing the Classic from the iPod lineup will have a negligible impact on Apple's bottom line, but it serves as a good opportunity to look back at some of Apple's most important and influential iPod models over the years. Today Apple is all about the iPhone and the iPod (and soon the Apple Watch), but there was a time, not too long ago, when the vast majority of Apple's profits came directly from iPod sales. So with that said, here's a fond look back at the iPod all-stars from yesteryear. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

FCC gets record number of net neutrality comments, what now?
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission's deadline for the public to comment on the agency's proposed net neutrality rules passed Monday with more than 3 million comments filed, by far a record number for an FCC proceeding. The 3 million comments, as of midday Monday, eclipsed the 1.4 million complaints the FCC received related to singer Janet Jackson's so-called "wardrobe malfunction" on live television during the 2004 Super Bowl. Many of the net neutrality comments called for the agency to pass strong net neutrality rules prohibiting broadband providers from selectively blocking or slowing Internet traffic or charging Web content providers for priority access to broadband customers. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Micro Focus buying Novell, Suse Linux owner for $1.2 billion
In a move that will collect a lot of infrastructure software under one roof, mainframe software provider Micro Focus has started proceedings to merge with Attachmate Group, owners of Novell and Suse Linux, for approximately US$1.2 billion. The combined company should have yearly revenue of $1.4 billion, with more than 4,500 employees and more than 30,000 customers, Micro Focus said.A merger of the companies makes sense given that both are established enterprise software vendors with global marketing reach and little overlap in either products or customers, said Kevin Loosemore, Micro Focus executive chairman, in a statement. Attachmate purchased enterprise software vendor Novell in 2011 for $2.2 billion. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Cisco gains strength in next-gen firewalls via Sourcefire code
Cisco is bringing technology obtained through last year's acquisition of Sourcefire to its firewalls to enable threat-focused security for enterprises. Cisco's ASA firewalls with Sourcefire's FirePOWER Services are designed to provide contextual awareness to proactively assess threats, correlate intelligence, and optimize defenses to protect networks. A Cisco ASA 5500 firewall with application control, combined with SourceFire's Intrusion Prevention Systems and Advanced Malware Protection (AMP), provides threat defense before, during and after an attack, Cisco says.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Apple locks NFC chip to Apple Pay while PayPal fires shot at security
When Apple unveiled Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor that verifies your identity to unlock your phone and confirm purchases and app installs, developers clamored for Apple to open up the feature to third parties. Now that Apple has baked NFC technology into the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, developers want access. But for now, like Touch ID was tied to specific functions in the 5s, NFC is tied to Apple Pay alone. An Apple spokesperson told Cult of Mac that the new phones' NFC chip will only work with Apple's new payment system, at least for the next year. It's unclear whether Apple will eventually allow developers to adopt the chip for their own purposes with future iPhone releases, like the company did with Touch ID in iOS 8, or keep the chip locked to Apple Pay.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
