How the Apple Watch could create a new mainstream market
Almost a year ago, I wrote a post on this blog that declared bluntly, "smartwatches are basically useless." Now that Apple, with today's announcement of the Apple Watch, has made the discussion around the usefulness of smartwatches relevant again, I'd like to revisit the topic. My main argument about smartwatches was based on the idea of putting a smartphone on your wrist. Trying to make phone calls might actually be more difficult, unless you pair it with a Bluetooth-connected ear piece, which is only an option for those willing to walk around with multiple wearable devices on their bodies. Typing text messages and emails is inherently more difficult to with your one remaining free hand on a smaller screen awkwardly strapped atop the other wrist. Speak-to-text is only convenient in private settings, unless you want everyone around you to listen in as you compose your text messages and emails. The only real benefit of a smartwatch is being able to decide whether an incoming call or message is worth taking out your phone. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Apple on Tuesday announced that the next version of its mobile operating system will officially launch on September 17th, just ahead of the company's new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets.Speaking at today's special event, held at Cupertino's Flint Center for the Performing Arts, vice president Phil Schiller showcased some of iOS 8's new tricks, including support for a new landscape mode on the company's iPhone Plus, as well as a new one-handed mode to help users better interact with the larger screens that will make their appearance on new handsets. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

ApplePay aims to replace your wallet with an iPhone
Apple's event in Cupertino on Tuesday wasn't all about iPhones. CEO Tim Cook also took the stage to launch the company's new wallet-killer technology, ApplePay.The new payment process works using NFC (near-field communication) technology, so all you have to do is hold your phone to a sensor at the cash register, then use TouchID to complete the process. ApplePay will be exclusive to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, because the new phones are equipped with the requisite NFC radio antenna.+ ALSO ON NETWORK WORLD Apple introduces iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus +To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Meet Apple Watch, the new Apple smartwatch with a clever new navigation scheme
It's called the Apple Watch, it looks like a luxurious synthesis of technology and traditional timepiece craftsmanship, and it uses a "digital crown" to navigate through lists and zoom in on data. Apple finally announced its long-awaited smartwatch on Tuesday, and, boom, just like that, the center of gravity of the shaky wearables market has shifted in a seismic reset. The new Apple "this changes everything" device starts at $350, and will be available early next year. And the kicker for fence sitters? Apple Watch supports the new Apple Pay system, so you can quickly by items from retailers ranging from Bloomingdales to Staples with a flick of your wrist. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

iOS 7 hits 90% share, iOS 8 likely to ship Sept. 17
With just hours before Apple announces new iPhones, an ad network trolling its traffic data said that iOS 7, which will be replaced next week on most customers' devices, was running 90% of all North American iPhones and iPads. The uptake on iOS 7, which was released Sept. 18, 2013, had reached 90% of all iOS devices in the U.S. and Canada by Aug. 31, according to Chitika. The online ad network regularly mines its data to publicize statistics about operating system and browser usage.MORE ON NETWORK WORLD: iPhoneys: Apple iPhone 6 concepts Like Irish metrics vendor StatCounter, Chitika's numbers are best described as "usage share" since the firm measures how active users of a specific OS are on the Web. Because both StatCounter and Chitika tally usage, not users, the numbers may have no relation to the "user share" -- analogous to the installed base -- which other analytics companies, like Net Applications, tout.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Apple introduces iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
