Isis Wallet mobile payment service changes its name to Softcard
Mobile payments startup Isis Wallet is changing its name to Softcard to avoid association with the Islamic militant group known as ISIS.The company said in July that it would be rebranding for that reason, but didn't have a new name to announce then."However coincidental, we have no desire to share a name with this group and our hearts go out to those affected by this violence," said Isis CEO Michael Abbott, in a company announcement. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Container party: VMware, Microsoft, Cisco and Red Hat all get in on app hoopla
When a sports team makes the playoffs a sense of excitement builds in their home city and people who didn't follow the team all season long  come out of the woodwork to jump on the bandwagon and cheer on their local squad. It almost feels like something similar is happening in the cloud and broader tech world with container technology right now. The Galaxy Note 4 is Samsung's best smartphone yet
Samsung Electronics has finally managed with the Galaxy Note 4 to put out a smartphone that's beautiful both inside and out.The much anticipated Note 4 was, as expected, introduced by Samsung Wednesday in Berlin ahead of the IFA trade show.Samsung has been criticized yet again this year for its extensive use of plastic in its smartphone designs. The Galaxy S5 just doesn't feel as much like a premium phone as the HTC One M8 or Apple's iPhone 5s. But it seems that Samsung took the criticism to heart and has started to change its ways, first with the recently announced Galaxy Alpha and now with the Note 4.To make the Note 4 look more like a premium product, Samsung has changed some aspects of the design, adding a metal frame and a new version of the faux leather that the company used on the Note 3 (no more stiches). That's a big step in the right direction, and the company has ended up with a device that no longer looks cheap. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

20 years ago, AT&T ad campaign 'predicted' technology that was well on its way
A YouTube compilation of a 20-year-old AT&T ad campaign dubbed "You Will" is getting pass-along traffic today (and not for the first time). It's a fun look at the company's predictions for a range of technologies that would become the likes of GPS, online books and electronic toll collection.Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that anyone could have seen these things coming back in 1994. It's remarkable that these innovations would become not only real but commonplace so soon after this ad campaign aired. That they would become a reality at all? That's less remarkable, because many were already well on their way.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Attack hijacks DNS settings on home routers in Brazil
An ongoing attack in Brazil tricks users into visiting malicious websites that attempt to silently change the Domain Name System settings of their home routers. If the attack is successful, the routers are reconfigured to use rogue DNS servers that redirect victims to phishing pages when they open banking sites, said Fabio Assolini, a security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, in a blog post Tuesday. The attack starts with spam emails that tell recipients they're being cheated and asks them to click on a link. The link leads to an adult content website that in the background forces browsers to load specifically crafted URLs.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More

Nothing says Welcome Back to School like a shiny cellphone station
Dana Hall School Some schools make kids unceremoniously stuff their cellphones into lockers before the start of the day, but an all-girls' day and boarding schooll in Wellesley, Mass., has taken a slightly softer approach to preventing electronics distraction: Dana Hall School students deposit their devices into a very nicely decorated cell phone station. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here Read More
