China's toxic e-waste capital is cleaning up its act

If you want to see where your old electronics go to die, take a trip to Guiyu. For two decades, PCs, phones and other electronics have been shipped to this town on the southeast coast of China, where locals in thousands of small workshops pull them apart with buzz saws and pliers to extract the valuable components inside.By all accounts, it's a toxic nightmare. Historically, the recycling has been done with little regard for health or safety, and toxic substances routinely leak into the air and water. No wonder it's been called one of the most poisonous towns on earth. But things may finally be changing. I spent two days in Guiyu last week, and while the smell of shredded metal still hangs in the air, efforts are underway to clean the place up. Some of the most dangerous activities, like using acid to burn metals from circuit boards, are being moved to an industrial park to the north. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Netflix looking to hire a 'Chaos Engineer'

Here's a job offering you don't see every day (asterisks mine): "Netflix is hiring a 'Chaos Engineer' … Basically, somebody to go in and f**k s**t up to prove we can recover. Ping me for details!"The "recruiter" in this case is Dan Woods, a senior software engineer at Netflix, and the "listing" was in the form of a tweet, which elicited a string of wisecracks – and a few expressions of interest -- from the Twitter crowd: Netflix is no stranger to chaos. In 2012 the company released the source code for Chaos Monkey, the first of its Simian Army collection of cloud testing tools. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Container party: VMware, Microsoft, Cisco and Red Hat all get in on app hoopla

When a sports team makes the playoffs a sense of excitement builds in their home city and people who didn't follow the team all season long  come out of the woodwork to jump on the bandwagon and cheer on their local squad. It almost feels like something similar is happening in the cloud and broader tech world with container technology right now. While containers are not a new technology, in the past month or so many of the major tech vendors have made announcements supporting the operating-system level virtualization process known as containers and Docker, the darling container management open source project/company.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

What an Apple mobile payments system on iPhone 6 might look like

Speculation is soaring that Apple's expected unveiling of iPhone 6 on Sept. 9 will also include some kind of mobile payments system, often dubbed "iWallet." The basic idea is to let consumers use their iPhone in place of cash or physical credit, debit, and various kinds of prepaid cards. But what would that actually look like? How might Apple put that together in a way that is distinctively "Apple-like?" + Also on NetworkWorld: iPhone 6 rumor rollup for the week ending Aug. 30 | What Apple can do to improve the iPhone 6 display | Apple's iBeacon turns location sensing inside out +To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Why CryptoWall ransomware will remain a shadow of CryptoLocker

The CryptoWall ransomware that filled the void left by the takedown of its CryptoLocker cousin is less effective and lacks the sophistication for wringing more money from victims.CryptoWall's shortcomings include less virulent technology and no payment options beyond Bitcoins, a cryptocurrency that many people would not know how to use in paying to have malware-encrypted files unscrambled, according to Keith Jarvis, a senior researcher for the Dell SecureWorks Counter Threat Unit, which performed an extensive analysis on CryptoWall. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

After months of speculation, Tesla Motors has reportedly chosen to put up its mammoth Gigafactory at a location in Nevada. The news broke earlier today, and though Tesla has yet to officially comment on the matter, the USA Today is reporting that Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval will be holding a news conference tomorrow evening at 7PM Eastern Time to announce the deal. The special session will likely last one or two days.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
