Big data wars: How technology could tip the mid-term elections

After John Kerry lost a very winnable election in 2004, Democrats were worried that Republicans had gained an almost insurmountable lead in both technology and data analysis."Progressive technology infrastructure was born in 2004, when we got our teeth kicked in," says Bryan Whitaker, COO of the NGP VAN, a privately held company that offers technology-based services to Democratic candidates."Back in 2004, we had no counter to the right's consistent messaging machine. Fox News, talk radio, Drudge, etc. put out consistent, never-ending messages, and the left didn't have a viable response to that," he says. "As we investigated ways to catch up, one thing we realized we should focus on is figuring out how to build up better grassroots efforts. The most persuasive way to influence someone is through person-to-person interactions, but how do you do that effectively, especially in off-year elections?"To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Cybercriminals create platform for automating rogue credit card charges

Cybercriminals have a new tool to make the most of stolen credit card details before payment processors detect the fraud, security researchers warn.A Web-based application called the Voxis Platform is being advertised on underground forums as a tool for cashing out money from stolen credit cards by automating fraudulent purchases, according to security researchers from cybercrime intelligence firm IntelCrawler. There are three main parties involved in every online transaction: the buyer, the seller and a payment processing provider that operates a payment gateway. In order to receive money from transactions, the seller needs to have a merchant account registered with the payment gateway. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

BitYota cloud data warehouse gets a boost from Microsoft Azure

Hoping to enlarge its pool of corporate customers to include the enterprise market, startup BitYota will soon offer its data warehouse service on the Microsoft Azure cloud, thanks to a partnership between the two companies."Microsoft is truly partnering with us, not just providing a compute infrastructure," said Graham Summers, BitYota chief operating officer. "There are so many parts of the organization we can tap into."Although BitYota's early customer base has largely been small businesses and startups, traditional enterprises are increasingly considering the service for new projects, Summers said. They could use the cloud service to analyze marketing or operational data, without the need to set up all the hardware and software infrastructure to maintain a data warehouse in-house.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Apple downplays disruptive potential of Apple SIM, while carriers rush to protect turf

Although Apple's latest cellular iPads include a carrier-agnostic SIM card, users shouldn't get their hopes up for an iPhone version. The so-called Apple SIM works with AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, and lets users select their carrier through the iOS settings menu. Because it's theoretically so easy to switch between carriers, some tech observers have hailed the carrier-agnostic card as a disruptive force within the wireless industry. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Motorola Droid Turbo: four things wrong and four things right

Motorola Mobility's Droid Turbo has a big battery and a powerful processor, but it also lacks a microSD card slot and optical imaging stabilization. The smartphone will be available starting Thursday from Verizon Wireless. Here are its main strengths and weaknesses.StrengthsBatteryOne of the main reasons to get a Droid Turbo is the promised battery life, which is helped by a massive 3900mAH battery. That's almost 70 percent larger than the battery in this year's version of Motorola's Moto X, which, like the Turbo, has a 5.2-inch screen, but with a lower resolution. The downside is that the Turbo is quite big-boned—at 169 or 176 grams, depending on the version, it is noticeably heavier than the Moto X's 144 grams. But I think the tradeoff is worth it. Motorola has said the big battery offers up to two days between charges with a mixture of both usage and standby time.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
