Should Cisco make like HP, and split?

As is usual after an event like this week's breakup of HP, pundits start opining on whom else should follow suit. Naturally, Cisco's name came up in a bulletin penned this week by Mark Sue, an analyst at investment firm RBC Capital Markets, and a longtime Cisco watcher.Sue believes Cisco should consider splitting into two entities: Cisco Solutions and Cisco Cloud. Cisco Solutions would include parts of routing, switching and services – those that are mature and profitable, and that Cisco should manage these businesses for higher free cash flow.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Windows XP flaws help Russian 'Qbot' gang build 500,000 PC botnet

The Russian gang behind the obscure Qbot botnet have quietly built an impressive empire of 500,000 infected PCs by exploiting unpatched flaws in mainly US-based Windows XP and Windows 7 computers, researchers at security firm Proofpoint have discovered.A year or two ago, what the Qbot (aka Qakbot) campaign has achieved in the roughly half dozen years the actors behind it have been operating would have been seen as a major concern. Belkin says router outages should be resolved

Belkin said Tuesday afternoon it had fixed an issue that caused some of its Wi-Fi routers to disconnect from the Internet.Some of the older routers experienced problems around midnight on Tuesday when pinging a Belkin-hosted service to check for general network connectivity, the company wrote on its forum.Several of the company's wireless LAN routers were affected, including the F9K1102, F9K1105, F9K1113, F9K1102, F9K1105 and F9K1116 models. The best new features in Windows Server 10 (so far)

Alongside Microsoft's Oct. 1 release of the Windows 10 Technical Preview, the company offered early previews of the next iteration of Windows Server and System Center. Symantec reportedly in talks to split into storage and security units

IBM expands Watson's presence across multiple industries

The customer base for IBM's Watson cognitive computing technology is expanding as companies from an increasingly wide variety of industries start to incorporate the service into their businesses.Watson is being used by organizations in 25 countries, including Australia, England, Thailand, Canada and Spain, according to IBM.The company has just opened a headquarters for its Watson activities in New York City's fashionable Silicon Alley district, and has established five new Watson branch offices, or as IBM calls them "Watson Client Experience Centers," around the globe.The Watson service uses natural language processing and machine learning to gain insights from large amounts of data, in either structured or unstructured formats.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
