13 Tips to Achieve Cloud Success

We interviewed 17 CIOs and IT leaders about their public and private cloud deployments, usage trends, skills requirements, lingering obstacles and future plans. Here are some nuggets of advice from these cloud giants. 1.  Don't get too caught up in cost savings. "If you make it a money thing, you're making a mistake," says Joe Spagnoletti, CIO at Campbell Soup. "It's an option to deliver capability. You have to get it at the cost commensurate with the capability. You can't do it for cost savings or management efficiency."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

CIOs Share Must-Have Cloud Skills

As the clouds roll in, IT organizations are recasting their tech talent requirements. "You don't need people to build servers anymore. You need somebody good at managing another organization responsible for doing that. That's a different skill," says Josh Jewett, CIO at Family Dollar. "You go from managing outcomes yourselves to managing outcomes through others."Jewett is one of 17 CIOs who spoke to us about the move to cloud computing. A key topic of discussion was how to cultivate cloud-ready talent. On the skills front, CIOs are in agreement that companies need to reexamine the traditional roles and capabilities in their IT shops to be successful in the cloud. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

CIOs Face Cloud Computing Challenges, Pitfalls

There's no easy path to the cloud for large companies with decades of legacy IT investments. Roughly 20 percent of Progressive Insurance's business applications run in a SaaS model, while 80 percent run on the company's own hardware. On the infrastructure side, Progressive uses IaaS, but mainly for experimentation. It would be "a whole new ballgame" if Progressive were some medium-sized business that didn't have an extensive data center footprint, says CIO Ray Voelker, but "we already have assets we own that we can leverage."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Oracle database certifications aren't 'permanent' anymore

Oracle is requiring database administrators to upgrade their certifications if the ones they hold are for older versions of its platform."Earning an Oracle certification is a well-respected achievement," the company said on its website. "However, as products age and are removed from Oracle standard support maintenance, the technology becomes less relevant, devaluing the associated credential(s)."While that may seem like a reasonable enough conclusion, one question in a FAQ page on the site notes that "Oracle has stated that certification is permanent" and the policy change "seems to go against that."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Dropbox dismisses claims of hack affecting 7 million accounts

Hackers claim to have stolen a database of almost 7 million Dropbox log-in credentials, but the company says its service was not hacked and that unrelated websites are the data source. The first data dump appeared Monday in an anonymous post on Pastebin.com and contained 400 username and password pairs. The author said that it's only the "first teaser" of 6,937,081 hacked Dropbox accounts and asked for community support in the form of Bitcoin donations. The user also claimed to have access to photos, videos and other files from the compromised accounts."As more BTC [Bitcoin currency] is donated, more pastebin pastes will appear," the post says.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

VMware again lets users run virtualized desktops locally with Flex

VMware is offering a new product, Horizon Flex, that lets IT departments run containerized and secured virtual desktops locally on PC or Mac laptops and desktops.Users get a desktop that works when they are traveling or in places without Internet connectivity, Kit Colbert, CTO for end-user computing at VMware, said in a blog post Tuesday, introducing Horizon Flex.Administrators can control the longevity of the virtualized software container by setting up a date when its use expires or by remotely killing it. Admins can also allow or deny the use of peripheral devices. The desktops can be installed for customers, contractors or remote employees using a USB stick or via the corporate network. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Linksys expands its WRT product line with a slick, stackable Ethernet switch

I have a confession to make: While I've been singing the praises of 802.11ac Wi-Fi routers for more than two years, I have personally been making do with an old 802.11n model. This weekend, I finally upgraded my home network with a Linksys WRT1900AC. And I didn't really upgrade to get more speed. I switched so I could put the router on top of the new WRT SE4008 8-port Gigabit Switch Linksys announced today."A switch?" you say. "This guy is geeking out over a new Ethernet switch?" Hey, I get it. For many, installing a Wi-Fi router all but eliminates the need for hardwired Ethernet connections. And since every consumer Wi-Fi router has at least a built-in 4-port switch for those situations you do need a few hardwired connections, many people will never need to buy an additional switch. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Salesforce.com gives mobile app development a 'Lightning' strike

Salesforce.com's development platform is known for its ability to create new apps quickly and easily, but with the launch of Lightning, both business users and programmers can get in on the fun.Lightning is the next generation of Salesforce1, the successor to Salesforce's original Force.com platform, and was unveiled Tuesday during the company's Dreamforce conference in San Francisco."Apps equal innovation," said Mike Rosenbaum, executive vice president of platform, before the conference. "And for me, and I think most companies, it's all about speed."More than just offering faster app creation, Lightning means more rapid iteration of an app is possible, Rosenbaum said.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Is there a point where a private cloud is cheaper than the public cloud?

A group of companies that sell products to build private clouds has determined a price at which it claims it is less expensive to operate a private cloud compared to using Amazon Web Service's IaaS public cloud. A report from the vendors - which include a collocation provider, a cloud management vendor and a network operator - attempts to address a question many organizations may be considering: When is it better to use a public cloud versus a managed hosting or collocation environment? The case study finds that if an organization is spending more than $7,644 in Amazon's cloud each month, then it can be cheaper to operate a private cloud. But analysts say it's difficult to put an exact dollar figure on when a private cloud will be more cost effective than a public cloud; there are just too many factors to consider, says IDC analyst Melanie Posey. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
