Samsung claims data speed test 30 times faster than LTE

Samsung Electronics said Wednesday it has tested blazing-fast data speeds for a next-generation network, clocking transmissions that are 30 times faster than 4G LTE.The Korean electronics giant said tests reached 7.5Gbps in a stationary setting, calling it an industry best.It also recorded stable signal transmissions at 1.2Gbps in a specially equipped Hyundai minivan traveling over 100 kilometers per hour at Everland Speedway in South Korea, and posted a video of the test on YouTube.So-called 5G successor networks to 4G, which currently operate around 100Mbps, could allow users to download a movie in only one second. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Data Center SDN growing 65% this year

SDN is exiting the hype phase and entering the usage stage. The data center software-defined networking market is expected to grow more than 65% in 2014, reflecting the maturity of architectures and the deployments under way, according to Dell'Oro Group.Network security appliances and Ethernet switches will continue to comprise the majority of SDN's impact, which is gaining a foothold outside of the major cloud providers, Dell'Oro notes. Application delivery controllers will also be impacted positively by SDNs as users demand more integrated features, such as security, on their devices when technology shifts like SDN emerge, the firm says.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Security vendors claim progress against Chinese group that hacked Google

A group of security companies say a collaborative effort has helped counter several hacking tools used by a China-based group most known for provoking strong condemnation from Google four years ago.The companies, which include Cisco, FireEye, F-Secure, iSIGHT Partners, Microsoft, Tenable, ThreatConnect, ThreatTrack Security, Volexity, Novetta and Symantec, said their efforts have led to a better level of protection in their products against the hacking tools used by the group. How long the effort will stymie the hackers remains to be seen."We're not naïve," said Novetta CEO Peter LaMontagne in a phone interview Tuesday. "Our view is that the threat actors that are out there are absolutely focused on staying ahead of our defensive efforts."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

YouTube served malicious advertisements, Trend Micro says

Malicious advertisements, some of which were displayed on YouTube, redirected more than 113,000 people in the U.S. to harmful websites in just a month, Trend Micro said Tuesday.Although online advertising companies try to detect and block such ads from being circulated on their networks, bad ones sometimes get through. Such ads can be very productive for hackers. It can mean a large pool of victims if shown on a high-traffic website."This was a worrying development: Not only were malicious ads showing up on YouTube, they were on videos with more than 11 million views—in particular, a music video uploaded by a high-profile record label," wrote Joseph Chen, a fraud researcher, on Trend Micro's blog.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Dell, HP keep moving to help carriers virtualize their networks

The next frontier for virtualization and standard x86 servers is in service-provider networks, and big computing vendors are moving fast to blaze the trail there.NFV (network functions virtualization) is designed to move the back-end processing in carrier networks from dedicated appliances to software that can run across a virtual computing infrastructure. That should mean faster development and deployment of new services for subscribers, plus lower network costs. NFV is likely to open up carriers' networks to services developed by a broad range of companies, including startups, and could help the carriers compete against Internet companies such as Skype and Google that deliver services over the top of those networks. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Dronecode: A home for drones

If I had to pick the top ten hottest technology fields of 2014 right now, one of my choices would be drones.Actually, the term "drone" is generally misused as it should strictly only be applied to pilotless, autonomous devices ("unmanned aerial vehicles" or UAVs) but, thanks to the US military and the mainstream press, the term has come to encompass remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs) as well.WIKIMEDIA Parrot AR.Drone 2.0To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Microsoft Patch Tuesday tackles three critical vulnerabilities

After a relatively quiet few months, Microsoft Patch Tuesday is back in full force, covering three zero-day vulnerabilities that administrators should attend to as quickly as possible.Microsoft issued eight security bulletins Tuesday, covering a total of 24 vulnerabilities found in Windows, Internet Explorer, Office and the .Net framework. Three of the bulletins are marked as critical, which means administrators should test and apply these patches immediately. A single bulletin can cover multiple vulnerabilities within one technology. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Dorothy Gale on recent spate of data breaches

The email pitch hits my inbox carrying this subject line: "Snapchat, and Kmart, and Chase…Oh My!"On the one hand, cringe-worthy.On the other hand, I had absolutely no trouble understanding the message that the public relations firm was trying to convey: These are scary times out there on the Yellow Brick Information Superhighway. (And then, by the way, I got to learn that the yellow brick road has its own Wikipedia page.)The movie was made in 1939 and, yes, there was a lot of publicity earlier this year surrounding its 75th anniversary, but I haven't even had to mention its name for the same reason that email subject line didn't need to be explained: We've all seen it, many of us many, many, many times. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

EMC to buy OpenStack cloud guru Cloudscaling

An EMC spokesperson this afternoon confirmed that the company will buy Cloudscaling, which builds clouds based on the OpenStack software. The deal would mark the latest in a wave of consolidation in the cloud industry, with previous big acquisitions including HP snapping up Euclayptus and Cisco buying OpenStack vendor Metacloud. It also comes as there is some shakeup in the OpenStack community, with one of the forefathers of the movement, Joshua McKenty leaving his post as CTO of Piston Cloud Computing Co. and landing at Pivotal, the VMware/EMC spinout that is focused on the open source Cloud Foundry platform as a service. The move also comes just before the latest Juno release of the project and as the community gears up for its semi-annual summit to be held in Paris. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE

Qualcomm to buy Bluetooth and GPS chip designer CSR for $2.5B

Qualcomm has agreed to buy chip company CSR in a move to strengthen its focus on the Internet of Things (IoT) and connected cars.Cambridge-based CSR develops wireless communications, audio and GPS chips for the automotive and consumer products markets. It also makes chips for indoor location services.Qualcomm plans to use CSR's expertise to strengthen its focus on IoT applications, as well as for its in-car infotainment division. Both business areas are fast growing and in order to become an important player in those fields, Qualcomm is willing to pay around £1.6 billion (US$2.5 billion at current exchange rates), Qualcomm said Wednesday, valuing the company at a significant premium over its closing stock price on Tuesday. CSR designs a wide range of chips and software for mobile phones and other devices, including location technology that combines information from several satellite networks, and software platforms that combine multiple wireless technologies including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, FM and GPS. The company also develops low-energy Bluetooth chips and technology that can be used to connect low-power devices including wireless headphones to the latest smartphones and tablets. Qualcomm's bid for CSR beat an offer from rival Microchip, whose bid to buy CSR was rejected in August as the undisclosed offer was too low. However, talks between CSR and Microchip continued after that. Qualcomm competitor and former CSR shareholder Samsung Electronics sold its entire stake in the company in January. In 2012 Samsung bought 21 connectivity patents from CSR for $310 million. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here READ MORE
